    CPVO adjusts working processes in reaction to COVID-19

    Given the exceptional circumstances and the heavy disruption caused by the COVID-19 crisis across the European Union, the President of the CPVO took the decision to extend deadlines that fall in the period 17 March – 3 May included, until 4 May 2020 for parties to proceedings before the CPVO and the Board of Appeal. The extension applies to all deadlines except for the submission of material for technical examinations and the payment of examination fees. Details of this decision are available on a dedicated webpage.

    New leaflet: Protecting New Plant Varieties in Europe 1995-2020

    The Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO) celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2020! The Community Plant Variety Rights (CPVR) system, based on the 1991 Act of the UPOV Convention, is the largest and most efficient regional system for plant variety rights’ protection in the world. Over the past 25 years, the CPVO processed nearly 70 000 applications and granted over 53 000 plant variety right’s titles. Today, almost 30 000 new plant varieties are being protected in the European Union by the CPVO.

    CPVO 25th Anniversary: portraits and testimonials of staff

    The Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO) celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2020.

    This is an excellent opportunity to turn the spotlight on some of the CPVO people who work on a daily basis to serve our stakeholders and make the Community Plant Variety Rights system work in the most professional and efficient way possible.

    Clarifying the functioning of the Farm Saved Seed system in Estonia & the neighbouring countries

    On Wednesday the 4th of March, the Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO) organised a seminar dedicated to Farm Saved Seed (FSS), and in particular the functioning of the FSS system in Estonia and the neighbouring countries.

    The seminar took place in Tartu, Estonia, and was organised in collaboration with the Estonian Ministry of Rural Affairs and the Estonian Agricultural Board with the aim to discuss the current practices in the Baltic region and inform farmers about the practicalities and obligations of the Farm-Saved-Seed mechanism.

    Video: introduction to the INVITE project

    A new video introducing the INVITE project has been published today.

    The video features François Laurens, Research Director at INRA & coordinator of the INVITE project, Martin Ekvad, President of the CPVO, and Päivi Mannerkorpi, European Commission's Directorate General for Health and Food Safety, who introduce the main objectives of the project. It was recorded at the kick-off meeting of the project last July in Angers.

    New European Commission report on the protection & enforcement of intellectual property rights in third countries

    The European Commission published on 9 January 2020 its new report on protection and enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in third countries.

    The report puts intellectual property related to plant varieties in the spotlight. Plant breeding can play an important role in increasing productivity and quality in agriculture, whilst minimising the pressure on the environment. The EU wants to encourage investment and research in this area, including in the development of new crops resistant to drought, flood, heat and salinity to better respond to the negative

    CPVO's Notes for Applicants: update 2020

    The CPVO Notes for Applicants have been updated to reflect the changes which happens at the beginning of 2020.

    Changes include:

    revision of the paragraph on the designation of a Procedural Representative (paragraph 5.4), revision of the Chapter 14 -procedure of surrenders and withdrawals (use of ‘MyPVR’), revision of the Chapter 12 on appeals, a new Chapter 13 on ‘Restitutio in integrum’. one new UPOV country listed: Egypt (in Annex 1).

    Signature of Service Level Agreement between CPVO & ERA

    The Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO) & the European Union Agency for Railways (ERA) have agreed on a Service Level Agreement which will pave the way for enhanced collaboration between the two EU Agencies, notably on procurement matters.
