    EU Plant Variety Rights in the United Kingdom

    According to the withdrawal agreement of the United Kingdom (UK) from the European Union (EU), holders of a Community Plant Variety right which has been granted before the end of the transition period, 31 December 2020, have become holders of a plant variety right in the UK under UK law. The full list of plant varieties with EU registered rights that have been granted a corresponding UK right can be found on the UK Government website.  

    The plant variety rights granted by the CPVO as from 1 January 2021 do not cover the territory of the UK, including Northern Ireland. In

    Technical Announcement

    Announcement n◦ 1/2021 of the Community Plant Variety Office. Decision of the Administrative Council of the Community Plant Variety Office on test guidelines 11/12/2020

    Technical examinations which are initiated or are to be approved by the Community Plant Variety Office must be performed in accordance with the test guidelines which have been adopted by the Administrative Council. Technical examinations started prior to the decision are not affected unless otherwise announced. The plant species concerned as well as the date of the decision are accordingly published in the Official Gazette of the Office. The technical protocol can be consulted through the website of the Office, or upon request can be transmitted by the Office. Technical questionnaires

    Change in invoicing take-over fees as of 1 March 2021

    Presently the take-over fees must be paid by applicants up-front when requesting the CPVO to take over a report from an entrusted examination office. This will now change and payment for the take-over fees should be made when the CPVO receives the final report from the examination office concerned, be it positive or negative.

    By decision of the President of the CPVO from 8 February 2021, where the CPVO makes use of a report on the result of a technical examination of a variety carried out previously for official purposes in a EU Member State by an entrusted

    CPVO releases new version of Variety Finder

    The CPVO has released an improved version of its Variety Finder database on 10 December 2020. The Variety Finder database, managed and kept up to date by the CPVO, contains information from 147 registers from 70 countries with a general search tool. It also includes a similarity search tool to test the suitability of denominations.

    The new CPVO Variety Finder features key improvements, both in terms of usability, with a more user-friendly and intuitive design, and in terms of functionalities, with new searching functions and the possibility to use our application programing

    The Community Plant Variety Office launches « CPVO Headlines », the new digital newsletter of the CPVO

    On 1 December 2020, the CPVO launched "CPVO Headlines", the new digital newsletter of the Community Plant Variety Office.

    "We realised that the way readers look for news and digest information has changed significantly in the past few years. With this in mind, we decided to modernise the format of CPVO’s newsletter and to offer our subscribers a monthly update which is more digestible, newsworthy and engaging", said Martin Ekvad, President of the CPVO.

    Vacancy notice for the role of President of CPVO

    We would like to inform our stakeholders that the vacancy notice for the role of President of the Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO) has been published in the Official Journal of the European Union (Ref: CA 379, 10 November 2020).

    The post is available from 1 September 2021 for an initial mandate of 5 years, with a possible extension for a maximum period of 5 years according to the Regulation establishing the Office as applicable at the time of appointment. The place of employment is Angers, (France), where the CPVO is based.

    New CPVO search tool for applicants

    The CPVO has launched a new online search tool, merging the information formely available in the so-called S2 publication and S3 webpage.

    The new search tool enables users to consult all relevant information concerning the closing dates for applications and the submission requirements for plant material per species and according to the examination offices which are entrusted to carry out the DUS technical examination on behalf of the CPVO.
