In the context of the development of its opinion on Plants produced by new genomic techniques, linked to the recently published EC proposal for a new Regulation, the Section for Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment (NAT Section) of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) held an orientation debate with its Members on Thursday 7 September 2023 in Brussels.

To support this debate, several experts and stakeholders were invited to share their views on the “Characteristics and impacts of plants obtained by New Genomic Techniques, and proposed regulatory way

Technical examinations which are initiated or are to be approved by the Community Plant Variety Office must be performed in accordance with the test guidelines which have been adopted by the Administrative Council. Technical examinations started prior to the decision are not affected unless otherwise announced. The plant species concerned as well as the date of the decision are accordingly published in the Official Gazette of the Office. Starting from July 1, 2023, due to several economic factors, it has become necessary to adjust the fees associated with our various services.  

In the aftermath of the Covid-19 crisis, combined with the recent peak in energy costs and the surge of inflation across Europe, the CPVO and our network of Examination Offices have encountered substantial cost increases, spanning across technical examinations, infrastructure, and labor costs.  

The decision to adjust these fees has been judiciously considered to comply with the need for sustainable funding

The SME Fund is a European Commission initiative implemented by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and will run from 23 January 2023 to 8 December 2023. This fund provides vouchers for intellectual property protection to small and medium-sized enterprises within the EU. 

This year, 4 vouchers have been published: 

Voucher 1 – IP scan – get up to EUR 1 350 on expert advice for your IP strategy; 

Voucher 2 – trade marks and designs – save EUR 1 000 to use for eligible fees;
