    EU Extends Protection Periods for Plant Varieties, Reinforcing Horticultural Innovation

    Following the REGULATION (EU) 2021/1873 OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL of 20 October 2021, the European Union has extended the protection periods for 4,302 plant variety titles. 

    This amendment, under Regulation (EU) 2021/1873, directly impacts species such as Asparagus officinalis L., as well as flower bulbs, woody small fruits, and woody ornamentals.

    The Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO) is tasked with implementing these extended protection periods, which now concerns over 4,000 varieties of the species group concerned and protected under the EU

    Technical examinations which are initiated or are to be approved by the Community Plant Variety Office must be performed in accordance with the test guidelines which have been adopted by the Administrative Council. Technical examinations started prior to the decision are not affected unless otherwise announced. The plant species concerned as well as the date of the decision are accordingly published in the Official Gazette of the Office.     Advancing Sustainable Agriculture in Spain and Italy: The Benefits of Plant Breeding and Community-Based Plant Variety Protection.

    On February 14th, the Community Plant Variety Office will be participating in a key event organized by the Italian-Spanish section of the Ilustre Colegio de la Abogacía de Madrid (ICAM), titled "Benefits of Plant Breeding and the Community System for the Protection of Plant Varieties as Tools to Strengthen Sustainable Development in Spain and Italy."
