As reading this Newsletter will show, the Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO) is involved with a number of important projects. On 25 July 2018, the Court of Justice of the European Union rendered a judgment concluding that certain organisms obtained by mutagenesis are ‘genetically modified organisms’ within the meaning of EU legislation. It appears that, as a result of the judgment, more plant breeding techniques will fall under the rules that govern genetically modified organisms and will thus be subject to more detailed regulatory scrutiny.
