On 8 June 2021, the CPVO organised in partnership with the European IP Helpdesk a webinar with a focus on new plant breeding techniques and the challenges of their IP protection.

The webinar offers insights to understand what new breeding techniques are and to give some examples of their possible applications as well as the benefits that they can bring to agriculture, human health and the environment.

In this webinar, you will learn about the latest genome editing techniques and their potentialities for plant breeding; the Biosafety Directive and what the European Court of Justice established on mutagenesis; the patentability of essentially biological processes and the products thereof; the relationship between essentially derived varieties and NGTs; the concerns on the effectiveness of the breeder’s exemption; and, finally yet importantly, the outcome of the report recently issued by the EU Commission on the state of art of NGTs, requested by the Council of the EU to shape a proper policy for the years to come.

The webinar is presented by Ms Cécile Collonnier, Expert in Biomolecular Techniques at the CPVO.
