About the CPVO

Since its establishment in 1995, the CPVO has been responsible for the management of the European Union plant variety protection system. With a single application, breeders worldwide can receive a Plant Breeders' Right (PBR) valid across the European Union. To date, CPVO has processed over 81,000 applications and granted more than 65,000 EU Plant Breeders’ Rights.

The European Union is an important market for ornamental plants

The EU has one of the world's highest densities of flower production. The CPVO plays a key role in protecting the EU’s horticultural sector and it grants about 1 150 titles for ornamentals every year. In 2023, ornamental species account for the largest number of applications (+/- 40%), ahead of agricultural species (+/-30%) and fruit and vegetable species (+/- 30%).

Economic and Environmental Impact

A recent study co-authored with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) reveals that the Plant Variety Rights System (CPVR) managed by CPVO contributes an additional €13 billion to the EU's GDP. The system also accounts for 15% of the current output of ornamental species in the EU.

Global Participation at IPM ESSEN

The trade fair is expected to host more than 1 300 exhibitors from over 46 countries and attract approximately 40,000 visitors, reflecting global market trends and enabling market partners to come together.
