You can either file online or file on paper. The application fees for online applications amounts to 450 €, for paper applications to 800 €.

Filing online is a service provided by the CPVO, which enables users to apply for a Community plant variety right online. For the time being this option is available in English, Dutch, French, Spanish, and German.

In order to file online an application, you have to log in the secure website.

  • If you are already a client to the CPVO, you should have a login and password, please Sign in.
  • If you are a new applicant within the European Union, please Create an account and file your application.
  • If you are an applicant residing outside the European Union you have to appoint a procedural representative base in the European Union to file the application for you.

After filing, additional time may be needed to complete the application (e.g. provide initially missing information and/or transfer the payment to the CPVO bank account).  The novelty checks and DUS tests are carried out only once the application is valid and complete. Therefore, applications should be filed sufficiently in advance to avoid delays to technical examination (meaning being valid/complete by the closing dates displayed in the S2/S3 publication) as well as repercussions on compliance with the novelty requirement.

Notes for applicants are guidance notes when applying for Community Plant Variety Rights. They provide answers to legal, administrative and financial questions arising when filing an application.
